Emerging Technologies: Augmented Reality
To augment is to make something greater by adding to it or to increase it – so in essence, we are talking about increasing our reality and making it more expansive with the help of gadgets and technology.
Augmented reality (AR) is an interactive experience of a real-world environment where the objects that reside in the real world are enhanced by computer-generated perceptual information.
Gamers use AR in advanced gaming such as Call of duty, Gears of war, and so many other video games. Designers create inputs – ranging from sound to video, to graphics to GPS overlays and more – in digital content which responds in real-time to changes in the user’s environment, typically movement.
Augmented reality, in computer programming, is a process of combining or “augmenting” video or photographic displays by overlaying the images with useful computer-generated data. The earliest applications of augmented reality we’re almost certainly the “heads-up-displays” (HUDs) used in military aeroplanes and tanks, in which instrument panel-type information is projected onto the same cockpit canopy or viewfinder through which a crew member sees the external surroundings. Faster computer processors have made it feasible to combine such data displays with real-time video.
Augmented reality applications also have been developed for smartphones to display information such as building addresses, real estate signs, retail sales offers, and restaurant reviews on specific sites seen through the devices’ viewfinder or electronic displays.
Remember when the game Pokemon-Go became a global sensation? That was possible with the use of augmented reality. It is a GPS-oriented app that “inserts” Pokémon characters into users’ environments so users can find and capture them on device screens.
Augmented reality is an emergent technology that has come to stay and will continue to make strides in different works of life ranging from engineering, medicine, education, agriculture, and so much more.
At Brainiacs STEM and Robotics, our emphasis is on different segments of emerging technologies, how they will impact our way of life. We give learners opportunities to learn a skill surrounding these fields – equipping them with skills needed to face the future that is going to be championed by technology.
