Regarding A.I. by Even Amundsen
Regarding A.I.
Though they present a technology of immense power, the way AI companies are currently going about their business makes silence on this point impossible. The exploitative mining of artwork into datasets for the training of image generators with no way or interest in fairly compensating the artists who originate the source artworks is an enormous problem in itself.
The adverse effects that the likewise thoughtless implementation of such generators into creative pipelines will have on the job prospects of artists, not to mention the real harm it will do to our industry and artistic communities, must also be considered and mitigated as best possible. That Artstation, as a hub of this community and a powerful platform in the industry, is failing to take a stand with artists adds to a mounting record of lackluster responses to recent controversies such as the NFT boom all the way up to the diminishment of art posted in support of Ukraine in response to its invasion by Russia earlier this year.
Clearly, the calculus of action at Artstation HQ is faulty. Hopefully, they will, when they remember that their platform is sustained by those who make and share art, change their approach and lend their power to the cause of stopping exploitative AI practices and in the future act in such a way as to be able to stand as an integral pillar of this community, not one that supports its exploitation. That choice is theirs. This is mine. Until Artstation shows solidarity, my gallery there will show nothing but this image. Solidarity and fair practices are key to an artistic community, so take care of each other and pay it forward.
Sincerely, Even Mehl Amundsen
