Role of Artificial Intelligence in the Field of Law

Role of Artificial Intelligence in the Field of Law

The article ‘Role of Artificial Intelligence in the Field of Law’ accentuates the positive impact of technological development in drafting legal documents, data analysis, effective legal research etc. which plays an important role in saving time and labour of humans. The authors elucidate about the world’s first robot lawyer based on artificial intelligence, which will strive to make a unique way of argument in the Court of U.S.A. With the exceptional use of artificial intelligence, humans could optimize the legal system.

Introduction: Artificial Intelligence

The acronym ‘AI’ stands for ‘Artificial Intelligence’, the word which is generally defined as the development of computer systems and machines to perform functions which usually require human involvement in it. These functions include problem-solving, decision-making, and other important functions which previously couldn’t be imagined to be done without human engagement.

Technically, Artificial Intelligence(AI) can be explained as computer science, which has the aim to develop machines which can perform efficiently and intelligently. AI’s involvement in the legal system has proved that it can’t be considered only as a field of technical involvement and academics. Everyone has seen the impact of AI in fields such as the medical and manufacturing sector and various other industries also, and it’s time to look at the role of AI in the field of law.

Artificial intelligence in the Legal System

Technology, in the age of modernisation, has deepened its role in the Legal System of the world. The advancement has been at its peak in this new era. AI has spread its roots much more deeply than ever in the Legal System of the world, which is considered a system which can’t continue its performance without involving a person in it. This perception has been completely changed by the latest news in the United States of America, which says that an AI-based ‘Robot Lawyer’ is going to defend a human for the first time in entire history. This surprising statement has created a huge turmoil in the legal fraternity as it has both a positive and also a negative impact on the people who are involved in this legal field.

The world’s first robot lawyer:

It will be the first time that a robot maintained and based on Artificial Intelligence will represent a person in a court of law in the United States of America. This robot is formed by the legal service chatbox named “DoNotPay”. DoNotPay was founded by a British-American entrepreneur, Joshua Browder in 2015. The robot will act on the defendant’s phone and will listen and observe the court proceedings in a focused way and will guide the defendant through a digital ear tool, thus the defendant will maintain only a physical presence and nothing more than that as he will be completely guided by the robot.

Another statement given by the CEO of DoNotPay, Joshua Browder, is that if the defendant loses the case in a court of law, compensation will be provided by them. This can have a surprising impact as every person who is attached to the legal field will keenly focus on this AI-based litigant. This setup will take place in February in the U.S. courtroom.

Applications of Artificial Intelligence in the Legal Field

Unlike the previous era, Artificial Intelligence has much more applications in the legal system and is behaving as much more transformative. It has adopted the power to decide the future of law firms and other legal organisations. Out of various applications, some have high practicality in the day-to-day use of legal professionals and thus explained below:

❖ Drafting Legal Documents

Previously, the documents which are the soul of the legal system were drafted and drawn up manually by the lawyers but in the era of AI, drafting has become much easier and the process has been enhanced, which was once time-consuming.

❖ Efficient Data Analysis

As the law existed for a long period, thus the case documents and the other files (i.e., the judgments of the courts, orders and decrees) must be efficiently analysed to operate the system of law. Data Analysis plays a necessary role in the field of law as it provides additional insights and shortcuts.

❖ Due Diligence

Due diligence can be considered as one of the aspects of the time-consuming problem and is of tedious nature. In the field of law, due diligence is of much importance, as being a lawyer, you have to advise your clients so that they can be satisfied and rely on you for their legal problems. Due Diligence has a long-term impact on the business of the client. AI has enhanced the process of Due diligence checks.

❖ Augmenting Research and Contract Review

By using software developed by Artificial Intelligence, legal research has become much easier and more efficient. This software allows cases and other legal documents to be reviewed quickly and efficiently. Reviewing generally refers to finalizing the documents that are required in the court of law and were before considered a tedious and tiring process.

❖ Predict Future Outcomes

The latest analysing ability of artificial intelligence has been proven beneficial in predicting future outcomes of pending cases in the field of law. The analysis of relevant precedents and identical facts of the case are the basic units for a case to be predicted.

Conclusion and Suggestions

After observing and looking at the role of Artificial Intelligence and its applications in the day-to-day life of a legal professional, it can finally be concluded that AI is already making significant changes in the field of law. With the passage of time, AI is developing in a more needed way. Thus, the maturing process is continued, and various opportunities will be created to empower AI in the legal field.

While it is considered a concern that AI’s role has increased in this field, we think that the increasing influence of AI on the legal world is of no fear and has much significance as it saves time and the labour of humans and allows skilled professionals to focus on the areas that need to be focused. Artificial Intelligence will help humans face the future in a much more confident way and optimize the legal system.
