“The Safe Zone” Is the First Filipino Film Written and Directed by Artificial Intelligence
Weâve seen artificial intelligence drastically change our everyday lives with technological advancements in image recognition, social media, and streaming apps like Netflix and HBO. Just recently, AI has caused a stir online with its ability to create a piece of artwork from just a single photo upload, but did you know that it can also write and direct a movie?
The Safe Zone, a short film by 28 Squared Studios and Moon Ventures, is the first-ever Filipino movie written and directed by artificial intelligence. It centers on three siblings who have to decide which one of them will go to the âsafe zoneâ after AI has taken over the world. It stars Denise Laurel, Richard Juan, and Angelia Ong.
âFor this film, our AI was able to produce a heart-wrenching script in a matter of seconds,â says 28 Squared Studios CEO Richard Juan, who also revealed that they used the AI chatbot ChatGPT to produce its script.
âThe chatbot produced a five-minute script, a shot list with detailed instructions on how to shoot the film. Can you believe the AI was able to give us specific camera movements, lighting requirements, and even wardrobe requirements!â
They even generated the filmâs storyboard using the AI system Dall-E 2. “We were able to ask ChatGPT to give us a full shot list, suggest specific instructions for the Director of Photography and camera operators (choice of camera lenses, camera movements and lighting requirements), recommend wardrobe preferences, and even give us specific prompts to let [Dall-E 2] create a full storyboard,” he reveals in an Instagram post.

While thereâs still an ongoing debate about AIâs ethical challenges, Richard believes that it’s a fresh approach to a filmmaker’s creative process. âItâs going to help filmmakers save time and resources by automating certain tasks, help spark new creative ideas and really give us new ways to tell stories,â he adds.
