By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: An artificial intelligence (AI)-powered robot attorney will refrain from arguing in court to assist a defendant fight a traffic ticket in February after the man behind the company that created the chatbot was threatened with prison time, CBS reports.
On Wednesday, Joshua Browder, CEO of DoNotPay, announced that his company “is postponing our court case and sticking to consumer rights.”
Browder said that after receiving threats from State Bar prosecutors, “it seems likely they will put me in jail for 6 months if I follow through with bringing a robot lawyer into a physical courtroom.”
The AI-powered attorney runs on a smartphone and listens to court arguments and formulates responses for the defendant.
It was designed to tell the defendant what to say in real time, through headphones.
In addition, the company received backlash from attorneys concerned over AI-powered chatbots usurping their jobs.
The DoNotPay company has already used AI-generated form letters and chatbots to help people secure refunds for in-flight Wifi that didn’t work.
